The Dual Mode TBM (also known as a Crossover Machine), manufactured by Sunward Machine, represents the highest level of geological adaptability in tunneling. Designed specifically for projects that encounter rapid and unpredictable shifts between hard rock, soft ground, high water pressure, and mixed face conditions, this single machine can quickly convert its operational system to maintain face stability and advance rate. This versatility eliminates the need for multiple specialized TBMs, offering significant time and cost savings.

Core Conversion Capabilities

  • EPB Mode
    (Soft/Cohesive Ground)
    Operates as an Earth Pressure Balance machine, using the conditioned excavated material via a screw conveyor to actively support the face pressure, ideal for clay and soft soils.
  • Slurry Mode
    (Water-Rich/Permeable Ground)
    Switches to Slurry Pressure Balance operation, using pressurized bentonite slurry for precise pressure control in high permeability soils or high hydrostatic pressure environments.
  • Open Mode
    (Stable Hard Rock)
    In stable hard rock sections, the machine can switch to non-pressurized Open Mode, removing muck via a belt conveyor for high-speed intermittent advance.
