OPEN TYPE TBM
Optimized Gripper Solutions for High-Speed Hard Rock Tunneling
The Open Type TBM (also known as the Gripper TBM or Main Beam TBM), developed by Sunward Machine, is the ideal solution for excavating tunnels through stable, self-supporting hard rock. This machine leverages powerful hydraulic gripper shoes to anchor against the rock face, allowing the main jacks to generate extreme thrust . This intermittent cycle ensures high advance rates and maximum safety in competent rock geology.
Principle of Operation (Boring Cycle)
- 01
Anchoring (Grip)
Hydraulic gripper shoes anchor the machine against the tunnel wall, providing the reaction force needed for excavation. - 02
Excavation (Thrust)
Main jacks push the rotating cutterhead (equipped with disc cutters) forward to crush the rock face. - 03
Regrip (Advance)
Grippers release, and the machine shifts forward, protected by its tail shield, ready for the next stroke.
Key Advantages (Hard Rock Tunneling)
High Advance Rate
Achieves high excavation speed in competent rock, significantly reducing project completion time.
Enhanced Safety & Stability
Rigid protective shield and continuous rock support systems protect equipment and personnel.
Integrated Initial Support
Allows for immediate installation of rock support (ring beams, shotcrete) close to the face, minimizing deformation.
Typical Hard Rock Applications
- ✓Large-scale Hydroelectric Tunnels
- ✓Long-distance Railway/Highway Tunnels
- ✓Mining and Resource Access Tunnels
- ✓Projects requiring high-speed rock excavation
Technical Excellence (Cutterhead Focus)
Sunward Machine Gripper TBM features robust, interchangeable disc cutters mounted on a high-torque cutterhead, designed to withstand the highest abrasive forces.
Thrust Capacity: Maximum thrust delivered by main jacks can reach 32 MN.
Anchoring System: Side-mounted Hydraulic Gripper shoes provide reliable, stable anchoring in rock.
